The Docks District is a regeneration project that will transform the dockside area of Barrow-In-Furness to create contemporary housing and a network of vibrant and natural spaces.

United Creatives helped to name this new urban quarter and consequently developed a no-fuss brand identity inspired by the industrial heritage of the area. We focused on the use of stencil typography due to its prevalence in marine environments and because of its suitability for signage cut into robust materials such as corten steel.

The reflected DD monogram is inspired by the heavy anchor chains adorning ships moored along the dockside and represents the link between past and future as it looks forwards and back.

In addition to the core brand, we developed an editorial framework in the form of an A5 booklet that was handed over to potential developers and architects to raise awareness of the scheme.

The booklet features a die-cut front cover, and presents information, imagery and proposals with a focus on community cohesion and environmental sustainability.

Using the Docks District brand we also outlined proposals for bespoke environmental signatures that will be used throughout the public realm. A custom branded brick made at the local kilns will be used for paving and printed site holdings will deliver key information relating to the regeneration project for those visiting the site.
