At United Creatives we relish tough graphic challenges and the lighting columns for Northumberland Street were just that.

With the form of the columns inspired by the wooden tidal posts that guide pilgrims across to Holy Island, we created an integrated lighting scheme that fuses a rigid grid of LED lights with an organic undulating pattern of copper plates, celebrating the history of the island and providing effective nightime illumination.

Designed by LDA and Michael Grubb Studio the tall monolithic form of the lighting columns was inspired by the wooden posts that guide people across the Pilgrims Way to Lindisfarne, aka Holy Island.

With these posts as our canvas we were tasked with designing a creative lighting solution that fuses effective nightime LED illumination, environmental branding and integrated panels for art and information.

With the form of the lighting columns inspired by the tidal posts that lead to Lindisfarne we wanted to dig deeper into the island and its history.

Produced around the years 715-720 in the islands monastery, the Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript gospel book, richly illustrated with a variety of images, patterns and latin language calligraphy.

We used these illustrated pages as the inspiration for our designs, re-drawing the intricate organic designs as vector grid-based patterns that lend themselves to modern design production and fabrication - a contemporary take on centuries old historical art.

Our solution combines a gridded pattern of perforated squares, each housing an LED light, surrounding a series of copper panels. These copper panels then change in size, creating a subtle gradient that fades along the length of the column.

With the position of the gradient changing on each side of column, when viewed long the street the pattern appears to undulate up and down - a subtle reference to the changing of the tides and the posts on the Pilgrims Way.

Situated at eye height on each column is a larger panel laser etched with local art and information, inviting passers by to engage with the structures.
