Established in 2021, THIS CITY is a new kind of housing company wholly owned by Manchester City Council. We worked closely with their team to design the branding, signage and artwork for their first residential developement - No 1. Ancoats Green.

With limited green space in Manchester city center the newly landscaped park at Ancoats Green is a huge selling point and something we wanted to highlight and communicate in the developments brand identity.

The area of Ancoats has a rich industrial history and, although most famous for its cotton mills, was once home to no fewer than nine glassworks. With ‘Alabaster House’ and ‘Topaz House’ both named after types of glass produced in the area we wanted to make reference to this in our graphics.

Our solution was to explore the refraction and distorting textures of reeded glass - using it in both the signage production and in our large format floor number set.

To bring an artistic element and vibrancy to the development we looked at the pattern based artwork of William Morris. The organic forms and nature scenes found in his work pair perfectly with our brand identity and help to further communicate the unique Ancoats Green location.

To create a versatile vector based pattern we re-drew the William Morris ‘Bird’ artwork by hand in Illustrator, ensuring perfect symmetry and creating a panel that can be tiled both vertically and horizontally. We then artworked this design in both monotone and full colour variants, using it on various pieces of branding, signage and window vinyl artwork.
